British Land & Sir Robert McAlphine - Broadgate Prize Competition 2023

Date

2nd October - 16th October

Project Type

Competition

This year the Broadgate prize invites teams to consider two design challenges: firstly, a larger scale strategic redesign of the square in the context of the new Broadgate campus, in relation to the surrounding newly developed schemes, and the new and existing pedestrian routes through and to the square. Secondly, a detailed development of a specific object in the square - this could be an inhabitable plinth for the ‘commuters’ sculpture that Broadgate are keen to integrate into the scheme; or it may take the form of a piece of urban furniture or public/pedestrian infrastructure, that could be replicated and installed at a wider scale across the Broadgate campus.

1. Exploration of design ideas for redevelopment of Finsbury Avenue Square in relation to the wider Broadgate Campus

2. The detailed design and resolution of an object in the square – inhabited sculpture plinth, urban furniture, or pedestrian infrastructure.

The square is an open-air, public space that is activated on some of its perimeter by bars, restaurants,

a cinema and other social spaces. It is heavily trafficked at some times of the day and relatively quiet at others. Teams should think of the whole area as a usable space for activity and quiet reflection in all seasons. The outer limits/boundary of the square is relatively fixed in its existing location, but the students may explore changes of form within the space and are encouraged to consider how the Gaucho Grill Pavilion will be addressed and/or incorporated into the new proposals. It is strongly advised that students analyse the design and function of existing public and green spaces across the campus such as the new scheme completed by DSDHA at Exchange Square.
